EFFECT OF DIFFERENT DRYING METHODS AND ETHANOL

CONCENTRATIONS ON ANTIOXIDANT AND

ANTI-HYPERGLYCAEMIC PROPERTIES OF

Gynura procumbens LEAVES EXTRACT

ABSTRACT

“Sambung Nyawa” (Gynura procumbens) plant is one of the herbs that traditionally been used to treat various illnesses. The main purposes of this study were to determine the effect of different drying methods and ethanol concentrations on G. procumbens leaves extraction in total phenolic content, antioxidant and anti-hyperglycaemic activities. G. procumbens leaves were dried using two different methods, namely freeze (FD) and oven (OD) drying before it was extracted with ethanol and water at different percentages (100%, 50% and 0%). For FD method, the highest (p<0.05) TPC value and antioxidant activities (DPPH and FRAP) were observed using 100% ethanol compared to 50% and 0%. The ?-glucosidase inhibition was significantly (p<0.05) higher in both 100% and 0% ethanol as compared to 50%, which were 22.2% and 19.9%, respectively. For OD method, DPPH, FRAP and ?-glucosidase inhibition showed the highest value (p<0.05) when using 100% ethanol. For FD method, TPC was positive and strongly correlated with both DPPH and FRAP (r=0.838 and r=0.814 respectively) as compared to OD method. However, ?-glucosidase was positive and strongly correlated with DPPH (r=0.845) in OD method only. As a conclusion, G. procumbens leaves extract using 100% ethanol had the greatest antioxidant activities (DPPH and FRAP) in both drying methods. However, anti-hyperglycaemic effects were found to be prominent when using OD method at all ethanol percentages.
