ABUNDANCE AND DIVERSITY OF BENTHIC OSTRACOD IN

SEDIMENTS AROUND PULAU BIDONG, TERENGGANU

ABSTRACT

Ostracod is a small bivalve crustacean that lived in benthic area. This study was done to identify and locate the abundance and diversity of benthic ostracod in sediments around Pulau Bidong, Terengganu, Malaysia as there is no further study on ostracod in this area. Twenty-seven sampling stations between latitude 05º35' to 05º38' N and longitude 103º02' and 103º06' E were selected around Pulau Bidong. A total of 1,004 specimens belonging to 12 families, 23 genera and 27 species of ostracod were found in the study area. The species diversity index, H’ recorded were between 1.2 and 2.1 and species richness index, ? were between 1.3 and 6.3. Station 27 recorded as the highest species abundance and diversity of ostracoda (?=6.3, H’=2.1) as this station recorded the highest clay and organic matter content. The dominant family in this study was Trachyleberididae and species that dominated the study area were Xestoleberis hanaii (15.8%), Loxoconcha malayensis (12.6%), Tanella gracilis (11.9%), Propontocypris uranipponica (11.8%) and Keijella apta (11.3%). In conclusion, the abundance and species diversity of ostracoda at Pulau Bidong are influenced by the content of organic matter.
