SOME MORPHOLOGICAL AND BIOLOGICAL PECULIARITIES OF MICROPLITIS PRODENIAE RAO ET CHANDRY (HYM., BRACONIDAE) AN INTERNAL PARASITOID OF THE CUTWORM (SPODOPTERA LITURA) ON SOYBEAN

ABSTRACT

Microplitis prodeniae Rao et Chandry is one of a number of parasitoids of the cutworm. Adults are black in coloui with the body length about 2.4 to 3.0 mm and wingspan from 5.2 to 6.4 mm. Antenna are filiform with 17 segments. The male antenna is longer than those of females and the ovipositor of females is short. The first three abdominal segments of both males and females are light brown with a black bend on the middle of the tergites. Females have great reproductive capacity with each laying about 108 eggs. Egg size is 0.217 + 0.005 x 0.071 + 0.005 mm. There are three instars in development of their larvae. Cocoons are brown and cylindrical. Internal and external feeding period inside and outside the host tissue are 7.74 ± 0.14 days and 4.74 + 0.07 days, respectively. The average life cycle of the female lasts 12.68 ± 0.25 days, at average temperature of 27.9°C and relative humidity of 82.6%.
