Potted seedlings of sentang, Amdirachta excelsa (Jack) Jacobs, were initially grown in potting medium without any addition of fertiliser. Four treatments were later applied: (1) complete fertiliser with N and P (NP), (2) without P nutrition (N), (3) without N nutrition (P) and (4) without N and P (control). Height and leaf area growth, dry weight production, plant N and P concentrations were measured. Height and leaf area increments, and dry weight production were all greater in plants treated with N and P. However, the ratio of root to shoot remained constant suggesting that sentang appears to have a low nutrient use efficiency. Foliar N and P concentrations in seedlings treated with N and P tended to be lower compared to seedlings treated with N or P alone suggesting possible antagonistic effects when N and P were applied together. The results also indicated that height growth could be due mainly to large leaf area which enabled plants to intercept large amounts of light and grow rapidly.
