A total of 118 isolates of Salmonella enteritidis were examined for plasmid and resistance to antimicrobial agents. One hundred and fourteen (96.7%) of the isolates were resistant to four or more panels of antimicrobial agents, with the common resistance being against penicillin G (98.3%), vancomycin (95.8%), bacitracin (96.6%) and sulphamethoxazole (96.6%). Only 28% of isolates were resistant to ampicilin and a substantial number of isolates were sensitive to gentamiciri (100%), kanamycin (99.2%), nalidixic acid (98.3%), chloramphenicol (97.5%), streptomycin (94.9%), cephalothir (93.1%) and tetracycline (92.4%). The most common antimicrobial resistant pattern encountered among the isolates was PVaBSu. A low level of plasmid diversity was observed among the isolates and 83.8% of the isolates carried a single plasmid of 38 MDa. Only five plasmid profiles were obtained.
